I'm not sure if I qualify as fail or not, so I've decided to leave it up to the experts - *you guys*...
I've never read the book(s) or seen the movie(s).
My first encounter with Twilight was seeing a behind-the-scenes MTV look featurette on YouTube. "What is this? I don't even..." It looked like it was going to be a TV movie.
I was intrigued by the story, and by the third trailer I even wanted to give it a look - until I read more about the story and saw actual promo clips and I thought "My god, this is dumb."
So, let's break it down...
What I Like:
1) the Story Itself: the idea of Bella and Edward retains that old "Beauty and the Beast" feel, which I love.
2) Girl Power - a multi-million dollar book/movie franchise written by a woman, (the first movie) directed by a woman, with the main character a woman - this is rare and it's (somewhat) a good thing. Old Hollywood White Male Blowhards? Suck it.
3) "Decode" by Paramore, on the Twilight soundtrack.
4) Despite never reading/seeing the book/movie,
I want Alice Cullen's hair. What I DON'T Like:
1) To be fair, I haven't read the books, but I've caught some fans quoting their favorite passages from the books...and...seriously? If those are the "best" quotes? That's fucking AWFUL. It feels like bad fan fiction. It makes me NOT want to read the books at all.
2) One time, there was this guy in college who was the EPIC NERD. Like, walk around campus in a silver, metallic cape. Like, I thought *I* was a socially awkward dork. This guy anoyed the hell out of me because he would bitch about every little detail in fandom - he hated both Buffy and Underworld, because "vampires shouldn't be killed by UV bullets" and "vampires shouldn't turn into dust when they get staked". The reason I'm mentioning this is because I don't want to flail about how vampires shouldn't be one way or the other, because I feel that stifles creativity...THAT BEING SAID, I would be able to forgive VAMPIRES SPARKLING as long as there was A LOGICAL, LEGITIMATE EXPLAINATION & REASONING FOR IT. I've searched the wikis, I've yet to find one. This annoys me. That goes double for all the other plot holes and contradictions I've read about in this series.
3) There's also the FAIL side to the Girl Power factor: the main character never branches out on her own, spends some time living independently and finding herself - it's all about being devoted to the men in her life and they to her, and the fact that she always needs someone to rescue her every 5 freaking minutes. There's also the inexplicable devotion she has to a boyfriend who isn't that great to begin with and treats her (from what I've read) like crap. I've even read about Edward retaining control over who Bella can and can't see in her spare time. WTF?
4) Obviously, unless to incur the wrath of fangirls, the movies can't stray too far from the books, so the movies really aren't any better. The nauseating blue tint of the first movie, and the cheesiness of the second - i haz barf nao?
Fans will argue that I'm judging a book by it's cover, so to speak, but my fail radar keeps going off like crazy any time I go near this franchise.
Dealing with fandom fails in the past, I say better safe than sorry and steer clear.
I do like this community, however.
